Creosote: the three stages and what each one costs you

Creosote does not build at one speed and it does not all come off the same way. There are three recognizable stages, and the one you have decides what the visit costs and what it can achieve.

The short answer

Creosote is what is left when wood smoke cools before it leaves the chimney, and it arrives in three stages. Stage one is a light, flaky soot that a brush removes without argument. Stage two is harder and shinier, like tar that has set, and it needs rotary work rather than a hand brush. Stage three is glazed — a hard, glassy layer chemically bonded to the liner that cannot be brushed off at all, and it is the stage that burns. What decides which one you have is not how much you burn but how COOL the smoke gets on the way out. An oversized flue, an exterior chimney on a cold wall, unseasoned wood or a fire damped down overnight will all push you up the scale faster than a hot short fire in a well-sized flue.

Stage one — flaky, and the one you want

Stage one looks like soot because it more or less is: a light, dry, flaky deposit sitting loose on the liner. A brush takes it off, it falls into the vacuum, and the visit is straightforward. A chimney that produces stage one and only stage one is telling you something useful about how it is being used — the fires are hot enough, the wood is dry enough, and the flue is the right size for the appliance. If your annual sweep keeps coming back with stage one, nothing about your burning needs changing.

Stage two — hard, shiny, and rotary work

Stage two is what happens when the smoke has been cooling more than it should. The deposit is harder, darker and slightly shiny, and it does not brush off cleanly; it needs a rotary head and more time. Finding stage two is a prompt rather than an emergency: it means something in the way the chimney is being used or the way it is built is cooling the smoke, and it is worth identifying which. Left unaddressed the same conditions produce the same result faster each season, because a rougher surface holds the next deposit better than a smooth one did.

Stage three — glazed, and a different conversation

Stage three is a hard glassy layer bonded to the liner. A brush will not shift it, and neither will more time with a brush. It is also the stage that burns: a chimney fire needs fuel on the liner, and glazed creosote is exactly that, in quantity, adhering to the surface it will damage. Removing it means chemical treatment applied over a period to break the bond, and in the worst cases it means accepting that the liner has been compromised and relining. Either way it is not something a sweep fixes in a morning, and anybody who tells you otherwise has not looked.

What actually cools the smoke

Four things, and none of them is "how often you light it". An oversized flue gives the smoke a large cold volume to expand into, which is the single biggest factor in older New Jersey housing and usually the legacy of an appliance conversion. An exterior chimney on a north-facing wall runs colder all winter than an interior one in the same house. Unseasoned wood spends the first part of every fire boiling off water rather than making heat. And damping a fire down to keep it in overnight guarantees a cool fire by design, which is why the habit of banking a fire is the fastest route to stage two there is.

How you would know without a camera — you would not

There is no reliable way to tell the stage from the firebox. A flue can look dark from below and be stage one; it can look unremarkable and be glazed twelve feet up where the smoke cools most. That is the whole argument for scanning before sweeping rather than after: the scan is what turns "your chimney is dirty" into a specific finding with a specific answer, and it is what stops somebody selling you a sweep that cannot remove what is actually in there.

Do chimney sweeping logs remove glazed creosote?

They can help convert some deposit to a more brushable form over time, but they remove nothing by themselves — the material still has to come out. Treat one as something that may make a sweep more effective, never as a substitute for one.

If I only burn seasoned wood, am I safe from stage three?

You are considerably less likely to reach it, but dry wood in an oversized or very cold flue can still produce stage two. Fuel is one of four factors, not the only one.

Does a chimney fire always damage the liner?

Not always, but it often does, and the damage is not always visible from either end. After any suspected chimney fire NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 inspection, which is precisely because the answer is not obvious.
