Chimney sweep and duct cleaning in Edison, NJ

Dryer vent cleaning is the job we do most in Edison, and it takes longer here than people expect for a straightforward reason: the run is long. We clear the whole thing from both ends rather than the first arm's length behind the machine, brush through the elbows where a vacuum alone will not reach, check the exterior hood, and show you what came out.

An exterior brick chimney with its cap, on a suburban house

The short answer

Chimney sweeping and inspection run alongside it, and both are usually worth booking on the same visit.

What we find on these jobs

Four or five elbows between the machine and the outside wall, with lint packed at every one of them, is the ordinary case. So is a flexible transition hose crushed flat behind the dryer because somebody pushed the machine back to the wall — that cuts airflow far more than dirt does and cannot be cleaned out; it needs replacing with rigid metal. At the far end we regularly find a hood whose flap has stopped opening properly, which backs the whole run up from the outside in and is the reason cleaning from the machine end alone does not fix it.

There was a lot of shaking in the chimney at night because the cap had come loose. They took it out and replaced it with a safe locking model, fixed the broken tile below, cleaned up the mess, and checked the…

The formation of water stains around the fireplace was prevented by repairing the flashing. The sealing seems to be well-done and secure. At last, weatherproofing feels solid. Thorough focus on detail.

Questions from Edison

Why does my dryer take two cycles in a house this new?

The length of the run rather than the age of the house. Twenty-five or thirty feet of duct with four or five elbows is common here, and every elbow is a place lint stops moving.

I clean the lint trap every load. Is that not enough?

The trap catches most of what comes off a load, not all of it. What escapes goes into the duct and settles at the elbows, and a clean trap tells you nothing at all about that.

Can you do the chimney and the dryer vent together?

Yes, and here it is usually the sensible booking. The chimney is seasonal and the dryer run is long enough to need doing on its own schedule, so one visit means one trip and both reports.

How do I check the vent myself before calling?

Run the dryer and go outside to the hood. If you cannot feel a strong flow of warm air coming out of it, the run is restricted somewhere between the machine and the wall. Damp clothes after a full cycle point the same way.
